Finished Kitchens - Pic Links Only, no responses please

This thread is for links to finished kitchens only. Please do not respond with questions or comments on this thread. If you have a question or a comment, please go over to the "Discussions" section of the Kitchens forum. The link is near the top of this forum. Or, you can click on the "My Page" link at the top of any post and see if the person has "send me an email" enabled and write that person directly. We started this thread to include as many kitchens as possible for reference to everyone. Threads are limited to 100 posts, so that is why we want no questions or comments on this thread. It will end too soon if you post anything except your finished kitchen. If you are posting your kitchen, please include a brief description in the subject line as well as the body of your post, my example is below. Thanks and happy remodeling!!! I have a contemporary kitchen: Shaker style cabinets, Tropic Brown Granite, SS appliances and ceramic tile floors. Our house is a modest 1650 sf ranch built in 1968 in St. Louis, MO. My gallery includes before and after pictures, which will be of interest to anyone considering knocking out walls. We removed all the walls in our main living area, combining three smallish rooms into one large area. I was the GC on our project; not something I'd recommend, but overall it worked out for us. I learned a lot, and I'm happy to share any advice/warnings/mistakes etc. to anyone! |

Here's a link to our pictures, which Rick Auricchio so kindly scanned and put on a web page for us. We have Ikea cabinets, and the major construction was to demo all the interior and replace the load-bearing wall with the steel beam and columns. Dacor ovens, Miele DW, Viking rangetop, slate tile countertops. We fired the contractor after the windows were in, and all rough plumbing, sheetrock, electrical were in place. We did everything, yes everything, after that ourselves. Every tile, every cabinet, everything. You can e-mail me directly if you'd like more info on anything we did. |

I never thought about what actual "style" my kitchen is--sorta traditional? Maple cabinets, champagne stain, wine glaze. Final pictures: scroll down to the "After" link. You can send me email from my home page with any questions. |

Here is a new, expanded version of my kitchen. I more than doubled the photos. There are captions under each, but if you click on the individual thumbnails or view them like a slideshow, you will see a paragraph with all the details about products and models and where and how and why... This is a maple kitchen with face frame cabs, white appliances, brushed stainless accents, and tumbled marble and glass tile backsplash. And a window seat and a dog paw-washing station at the back door. you can make comments at pbase, on my thread further down in the Gallery, or email me - just click on my name or "my page" above. |

Here's a look at my completed kitchen remodel, before and after. I was the GC and the subcontractors, with the exception of the electrical, plumbing, and granite install. Everything else I did myself. The images describe the appliance and materials, so I won't bore you with that here. Thank you all for sharing your images; I hope you enjoy these! D |

We recently redid our kitchen. Hired a general contractor; they did a good job on the work, although the job took nearly two months longer than anticipated. They designed the layout and we designed the style and picked out all appliances. You may leave your comments and questions on the site or email me directly. |

We have been without a kitchen since December (held up by so-called-contractors, the permit process, repiping the gas lines, a new furnace, a plumber who ran off with his married girlfriend, the list goes on and on). My husband did most of the work (not including the electrical, plumbing, granite install and bathroom tile). We are so happy to have a home again! -Kraftmaid - Thorton/Huntington Frost Glaze cabinets purchased from Buycabinets.com for $2500 less than Home Depot Quote We hired a great finish carpenter to do all of the trim and detail work. We still need to fix some painting problems, drywall lines and install the California-code flourescent light in the middle. Thanks for checking out the pictures. |

Good Morning to all of you! I am a new "poster," but definitely NOT a new "reader." I was waiting (and waiting) to be completely finished, but don't know if that will ever happen, so here I am. It's so nice to join you and I am totally addicted to this kitchen forum. Like all of you, I found it extremely helpful when redoing our kitchen (I will try to post pictures--IF I can figure it out--not a computer wiz). I definitely feel the "WOW" factor with my new kitchen and also posted this in the "WOW" question. Which I could show you BEFORE pics--really dark and gloomy. Very happy now! Hopefully this link will work although I wish it had ALL trim, etc. finished. |

Provencale (sort of)—colorful and eclectic
My kitchen is comfortable and homey and we used provencale colors of yellow, red, green, and blue. We used bamboo flooring, two colors of cabinetry, and soapstone. We tore down a two-car garage and took half the space to extend the kitchen. We got more light, room for several cooks at once, a walk-in pantry and a large table (it's new and not in the photos) so we can have ten for dinner in the kitchen. Some of what we used: email me if you have any questions. |

Hi all - My kitchen pics finally scrolled off the gallery, so I thought I would add them here. Good luck to all who are in the process....we've been done for a year now and it still feels new. We recently re-landscaped, so now there is something pretty to look at through the windows. Hang in there...it is worth it. Thanks to many for their contributions. -Maple shaker cabinets, natural finish, local custom made Phew, I think that's it. Feel free to send e-mail with questions. |

Engineered stone/quartz/ Avanza counters/white thermofoil facelif
Wasn't going to post this but there aren't many pics of engineered stone yet so thought it might be helpful. I didn't have any decent before pics. Improvements include small updates to a 6 year 'builder's' kitchen with ample size and agreeable floorplan. Appliances remain (Cook, no. Eat, yes) - Removed GIANT fluorescent box fixture from ceiling. Left a 50 sq ft hole in ceiling. (DIY) I can offer advice on DIY recessed light installation, flurorescent box removal, laminate counter removal (thanks remodeling forum), and grout coloring. Also, can relate experience with Avanza purchase. Shannon |

Galley Kitchen/Traditional Contemporary
We tore out our circa 1962 kitchen out last summer and redid everything from the walls out. Work was done by a kitchen and bath contractor: demo to functional appliances 6 weeks, everything but backsplash and finishing details at 9 weeks, completely finished at around 16 weeks. I cook a lot and have lots of cooking related stuff,as well as several hundred cookbooks. One goal of the remodel was to optimize the space in the kitchen, hence lots of specialized cabinet features. Cabinets: custom, local cabinetmaker. 30" deep rather than standard 24". Cherry, natural finish. Full extension drawers and pull outs for all interior shelves. Counter and window sills: Giallo Santa Cecilia granite, with lots of beautiful garnets Kindred undermount SS sink, Grohe LadyLux Cafe faucet and soap dispenser, ISE hot water dispenser Backsplash: Sonoma Tilemakers, vanilla glaze Wolf 5 burner cooktop Tarkett vinyl flooring: Arizona Sand The kitchen has been in about a year now and we love it! All the planning and agonizing over choices really paid off. |

OK, I guess our kitchen is pretty much finished! It was part of a complete buildout of an empty loft space in NYC (new condo conversion). We had no walls to constrain us, which was nice, although everything seemed to fit into its own layout and size as we designed it. Some details on the components: Cabinets are by Millwood and purchased from Kitchen Expressions in Brooklyn, NY. Solid cherry slab doors, full-ext. drawers, many slideouts, diagonal corner base cabs (highly recommended!) w/full susans, corner diagonal garage and shelves, pullout pantry shelves. Pulls: Amerock SS, 2 sizes throughout (approx 6" and 9"), longer ones for fridge and pantry. Countertops & backsplash: Kashmir gold granite, 3cm, full bullnose. Bartop and island top: Ubatuba granite, 3cm, full bullnose. (10'x 20" and 3.5'x5' respectively.) Island: 32" high, 2'x4' base, 18" trash pullout, utensil and silverware drawers on top, 15" overhang on outer edge (chairs to be purchased). Fridge: SZ 642, 42" SxS, full overlay. Beverage fridge: SZ 249RP, paneled, built into the end of the peninsula with the door on the end. A false back on the peninsula let us install the fridge with a continuous toekick on the kitchen side. Dishwasher: Asko 1796FI fully-integrated/paneled. Range: Wolf 36" w/grill. Hood: Best by Broan KEX273 (external blower on top of bldg.). Kitchen Sink: Kindred KSDC2LU, 1+3/4 bowl, 8"/10" deep. Kitchen faucet: Moen Puretouch Classic, SS w/sidespray and filter in the neck. Disposal: Waste King SS5000 batch disposal (recommended!). Bar sink (corner): Kindred KSS3U. Bar faucets: Moen Monticello and Moen Aquasuite (with undercounter filter). Microwave/Conv: Sharp 930. Undercab lights: Seagull 10W xenon lamps (22 total), 300W transformer w/dimmer switch. Pendants: Techlighting monorail with Sophia pendants (to be installed). OK, here's the link: |

Well, before my post drops off the the second page, I thought I'd add my kitchen to this thread. Thanks for starting it Wendy. :-) Well, I'm not finished yet, but I am FINALLY posting pictures, yea!!! Our DIY project began on December 28, 2003 after a leaky pipe was discovered. I had been researching cabinet choices, etc. since October, but had nothing firm yet. Well, here are the specifics: Thanks for all of your help and support during this project! Great idea, Weed. Adding my kitchen pix in. Will cut & paste the text from my original post: Finally, I am posting photos of my kitchen remodel. It is pretty much done except for knobs, putting the baseboards back on, backsplash, and touching up the paint that was scuffed when the cabinets went in. The doors for the cabinet over the frig came in in the wrong size, so we are still waiting for those. Also, we plan to get new windows sometime in the future, but not anytime soon. We started planning for this remodel in August of 2002, started demolition Memorial Day weekend of 2003. The contractors came mid June and left around August 1. Since then it has been a flurry of houseguests and vacation, and generally not thinking about the kitchen for a little while. Work DH did: All demolition (except floor removal – we had a contractor do that) We also took care of getting our own granite, floor and appliances. We estimate that the stuff we did on our own saved us more than 10K. We were lucky to have contractors who had no problem with splitting the responsibilities. Info about what we got: Floor – Duro cork in "Edipo" (we designed our own pattern) I mention Priceless Granite and Seattle Kitchen Designs because they did a fabulous job – Priceless was so accommodating and the install is beautiful – they really gave some thought to where the seams should go and making the most of the slabs we bought. SKD also GCed our project and they were great to work with too – coordinated plumbing, electrical, cabinet and appliance install. Knobs – I am still in “knob hell” and can’t decide what to get, thus the blue painter’s tape on the cabinets Backsplash – will be a blue opalescent glass tile, applied only behind the cooktop. It picks up the various blue shades in the granite perfectly. I plan to put it in next year sometime, doing it myself. Picture of it with the granite in the link. Still looking for little extras like new dish drainer, canisters and stuff like that. Thank you everyone for your help and input on this – so much of what we ended up with I learned about on this forum! You all made it so much easier and better.

I finally took some "all done" photos of our kitchen and posted them online. Before my original post rolls off the gallery, I have recopied the text here that was originally posted around Sept 20....... Finally - the contractor has been paid the last installment, so that means the work is done, and now its time to accessorize. Oh goody, more shopping! I already know that I need new pots and pans for my smoothtop stove - the old ones are worthless now. (I hated having to give away that grill pan that was only 6 months old.) Also still need to replace the cushion on the window seat, window treatments, switchplates and receptacles to match closer to color of tile. Also can't seem to find the right size undersink organizers - and also of course - a smooth bottom grill pan. Here are some of the things you may (or may not) see in my after pix: * Two new replacement windows with grills in between the glass Thanks to all who have answered my numerous questions throughout this process. I didn't stumble onto this board until I was already through most of the planning and purchasing - but I learned alot by checking in here daily. I have continued to do that even since most of the work was done - this board is like an addiction - and I'm not ready to leave ! Rachel |

Here's our kitchen (and bathroom, and Moze-O-Leum gameroom). Details are supplied with the photos themselves. Briefly, we have a condo loft in NYC. Kitchen is open, with a sort of modern-but-warm style: tall cherry slab cabinets, ss rod pulls, kashmir gold granite w/ubatuba on a raised peninsula bartop and table-height island. Paneled fridge and dw, giving the kitchen a relatively warm, subtle feel to it. I guess the pictures will do a better job at describing the rest! $^) |

Hi all. Sorry its taken so long for me to post pictures of my kitchen. It is still waiting for a few last details, but not much. My kitchen is not as fancy as many I have seen here, but it is perfect for me. Here are a few details: Cabinets -- custom maple with honey spice stain by Kahle's Floor -- porcelain tiles, 16"x16" (wish I'd gotten something less hard, but I think it is pretty) Kitchen Aid KSRG25FKSS (love it) Bosch DW #3336 GE Micro/Hood JVM1860SS (I think) GE Profile Gas Range JGSP44BEYBB Danze Melrose Pullout Faucet and soap dispenser Blanco sink (single bowl) Verde Peacock granite counters ISE batch disposal Backsplash decorative tiles are from a company called Encore Ceramics, Inc. and are from the Vecchio line. The large one is called Bologna (that's ba-low-nya, not baloney, please!) and the smaller are called Verona. The small tiles in the bottom border are verde laguna polished and travertine paglierino (the 6"x6" field tiles are the same). I believe the knobs are from Classical Brass. I think. The cellular blinds are Hunter Douglas Duette Classic in Linen, with the Literise feature. I bought the pendant locally and don't know the name. I'm still waiting for it to be hung! I also need new switchplates. The ones you see here are the cheapie plastic ones. I think I will add some simple curtains, too. I also want a new table and chairs. Thank you to everyone in the Kitchen and Appliances forums for your wonderful advice, opinions and just plain listening to me during meltdowns! Fortunately, things went smoothly most of the time. Best of luck to you in your project, and enjoy the journey! Pam PS -- please email any questions to me -- don't post here! Let's save the posts for pictures. Thanks!! |

RE: Finished Kitchens - Pic Links Only, no responses please
I am finally finished enough to post pictures in the gallery. We started this project in mid-October 2003. I had been planning for the kitchen for over a year. This remodel comes after two years of mostly DIY work on our home, including new siding, landscaping, refinishing wood floors, new carpet upstairs, painting galore, brand-new everything in the bathroom, etc. I think that after two years of first-time home ownership, we’re finally finished for a while! Our goal for the kitchen was to keep it looking kind of like it was meant to be in our 80-year-old home. If I would have had more money, I would have been able to make it look more "period," but I did the best I could within our budget! Because we spent $10,000 total, I'm going to post it in the Budget Kitchens thread as well. My husband, father, and I did 90% of the work on the kitchen by ourselves. I did all the painting, the tile backsplash, and staining the furniture, and my husband and I worked together on scraping and refinishing the hardwood in the kitchen. We also had a lot of help from a family friend (my parents’ next-door neighbor) and my uncle. The only job that wasn’t done by us was the countertop. We were too nervous to do that. I originally started out wanting Premier cabinets from Home Depot. For some reason, my kitchen designer there warned me that they were getting a lot of complaints about Premier cabinets around that time (August 2003). So since I had to wait a long time that day to order my cabinets, the designer offered to get me KraftMaid cabinets at a reduced price, very comparable to the Premier cabinets. So I said yes, because I’ve always heard great things about them. Now I realize that I got framed cabinets, and I wish I would have stayed with the Premier cabinets, which are frameless. However, I love the KraftMaid cabinets – they are strong and very sturdy, and beautiful. Just a word to the wise: By getting framed cabinets, I’ve lost 5 inches on every base cabinet because of the cabinet frame. Just a little fact to ponder! J Okay, here are the details: We live in an older home, a 1923 Craftsman-style Foursquare with 3 bedrooms and 1 bath. We would love to add on later, but we’ll see about that later. The kitchen before was tiny, about 9.5 feet by 10 feet. We had an adjoining dining room that was never used, so we decided to knock out that wall (non-load bearing) and combine the two rooms. Since I had a fancy-smancy dining room set, I knew it was too big and too formal for this room, so I sold the set on ebay! I used that money to buy unfinished furniture (table, chairs, and counterstools). I finished them myself. The kitchen is sort of a capital G shape, if you can imagine that. I tried hard to keep the overall look so that it would fit well in our home. We have a few built-ins in the house, and all the interior doors are white with recessed panels, so I decided to get white cabinets with recessed panels. I did lots of research, and decided that I wanted stainless appliances, dark countertops, wood floors, and white 3x6 subway tiles on the backsplash. I first started out wanting to get Blue Pearl granite, but after a while, I realized that this cost was just too expensive for us to handle. We really did do what I consider a budget kitchen, because although some of the materials could have been super expensive, I tried to get them at a discount whenever I could. Plus, it’s a small kitchen, meaning less cabinets, and less money. So I decided to go with a dark gray, almost black, laminate, and then I went from light blue walls to red walls! I was worried about how all red would look in the adjoining dining room, so I researched some more, and decided to create Craftsman-style wainscoting 2/3 up the walls and paint everything white. The top 1/3 is painted red. I think it turned out beautifully. I cannot say enough about my kitchen. It has exceeded my expectations, and the fact that we did it all by ourselves gives us such a great feeling. We could not have afforded the kitchen if we had to pay a contractor. I know they don’t read this, but I would like to thank my husband and my father, who both enjoyed themselves (Dad enjoyed it more than my hubby, because Dad didn’t have to live with the mess for almost 3 months!). They were willing to do this work on their evenings and days off, and I really appreciate it. I also want to thank all of you for your support during this time. I had a few setbacks as you might remember during this time, and the support from the board and concentrating on the kitchen really helped me get through it. Here are the details: Original Budget: $10,000 not including furniture. Just made it! Countertops: $1500. (More than I expected, but that price includes labor). Wilsonart Graphite Nebula with no-drip edge, “flat deck,” meaning no 4” backplash. Stove: Frigidaire Gallery Electric smoothtop slide-in in stainless Fridge: Kenmore Stainless Steel with Black 21.9 cu.ft. bottom freezer model # 72213. It has an icemaker, but we didn’t hook it up. I love this. It’s so convenient to just open it up and not have to bend over to see the fresh food items. I love the curved handles, too. http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_SessionID=@@@@0509613736.1072016883@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccicadckemljjedcehgcemgdffmdflg.0&vertical=APPL&fromAuto=YES&bidsite=KENM&pid=04672213000 Dishwasher: Frigidaire Gallery Stainless www.frigidaire.com Microwave: White Westinghouse in Stainless, bought for $50 at Kmart long time ago Disposal: Kenmore ¾ hp #60563 at www.kenmore.com, on sale for $99 Sink: Neptune by Elkay single bowl 25”x22”x7” - $59 at Home Depot. Love it! Faucet: Delta Waterfall in Stainless with soap dispenser. Model 174-SSWF. $150 on ebay. Saved $100 from Lowe’s and Home Depot price. Range hood: Jenn Air Slide-out hood, Model RH800. I found this on ebay. I wanted a slide-out range hood and didn’t care what manufacturer, but they were all at least $300. So I searched on ebay, and found this one, which I believe is a discontinued item, for $160. Big savings! It’s vented to the outside. Tile: DalTile Rittenhouse Square 3x6 Matte Arctic White with Delorean Grey grout. $225 for materials. Was going to hire someone to install it, but decided to do it myself and save about $400. It was quite an experience, but I’m so pleased with the result! Floors: Some type of hardwood, probably fir or pine, refinished ourselves. Ripped up four layers, scraped, pulled out nails, sanded, stained, and put three coats of high-gloss polyurethane. Cost about $60 to rent sander, and we already had the stain and polyurethane, so the total cost was about $60. Paint: “Barn,” a Martha Stewart color at Sherwin Williams in satin, and American Traditions in White semi-gloss for all trim. Furniture: Pop’s Unfinished Shaker furniture. www.popsfurniture.com. Hawthorne counter stools, Mission-style chairs, and shaker-style table by John Greenleaf. Got a great deal on four chairs, table, and three counterstools. $725 with free shipping. Bought them with money from the sale of my other dining room set. I stained and poly’ed them myself. Lighting: Period lighting from www.rejuvenation.com. “Jefferson” main light in kitchen and dining room in brushed nickel with 300-watt bulb, and “Laurel” above sink in brushed nickel. $300 total. “Jefferson” also in dining room, but was a Christmas 2003 present! Outlets: Plugmold by Wiremold, www.wiremold.com. Expensive, but worth it. $65 at Home Depot for two three-feet strips. One big splurge. Hardware: Bin pulls and knobs in satin nickel, bought on ebay for $56, including shipping! Same exact knobs and bin pulls at Lowe’s would have been $160. Saved $100! Shelf Liner: Rationell from Ikea. Spent around $100. Some people prefer to leave their shelves unlined, but I tend to be klutzy and I would be so upset if I ever had something leak onto my new shelves. This liner is very reasonably priced ($4 a roll), is clear, and can be removed and washed at any time. It doesn’t stick to the shelf, either, liked some types of shelf liner. I can slide things easily around on this surface. The hardest part was measuring and cutting the liner, and then having to use the blowdryer to make it lie flat, but it was fun after the first few tries. I plan on staying around this forum for a very long time, so please feel free to ask me any questions that you might have. I can’t believe we came so far in three months, but we just wanted our house back to normal as soon as possible. I am not completely done with the remodel, though. We’re still waiting for my dad to come down and put in the rest of the molding in the dining room, and for that reason, I haven’t included pictures of the dining room or the ebony-stained dining room furniture yet. It should be done by the first of February, 2004, so I will post more pictures then. I will link to my finished pictures below. Just so you know, I’m also working on placing my pictures on another picture site, www.photoaccess.com. I think that they have pictures that are more clear. When I am finished posting them on that site, I will let you know. For now, my pictures are on pbase. Also, one more thing: For new people to this site: I also have detailed pictures of the three-month-long remodel progress on the www.pbase.com/beths96 site, titled “Kitchen Remodel Fall 2003.” You might want to check out our progress and see what kind of kitchen we started with! Thank you, everyone! I’ve received many emails and personal notes about my kitchen, and the kind words I have received have meant so much to me! Good luck on your kitchens! Thanks, Kitchen Buddies! |

Well I am finally done with my Kitchen remodel and addition. I added a 6ft x 4ft bump out in the kitchen in order to have a breakfast table in the kitchen. Our old kitchen had no room for any sort of eating area. I live in a 1925 Julia Morgan (built Hearst Castle) home which I adore. The style of my house is English Cottage. The original doors and windows were refurbished to keep with the style of the rest of the house. The rest of the particulars are: Viking 36" dual fuel range 6-burner I am very happy with all the choices and finishes I picked. Love the soapstone, and the cabinets. Favorite things are pull out trash bin, and deep sink. If I could do it over, would not let contractor put air gap under my beautiful faucet, and would have looked for an oven that matched my viking range better. Overall the project started July 1, and completely finished on December 16. The remodel is completely seamless and appears to completely blend in with the rest of the house. Guests have commented that it looks like this kitchen has been there since 1925, mouldings and period looks in tact. I had fun, hope the rest of you do too! Deb |

Deb, Love your kitchen! I, too, am getting white cabinets (really sort of an off white with a vintage glaze finish by Wood Mode). I am curious as to which Ethan Allen table you selected to go with your cabinets. I have been shopping there for a table as well! |
Dark Cherry Kitchen w/ Red walls.
I posted this a while back and it seems to have scrolled off. So here it is again: Welborn dark cherry cabinets. Viking 36-in gas range/hood. Viking dishwasher. Sharp microwave. Jenn-Air fridge. Formica "butter-rum granite" laminate counters. ceramic tile floor, and B.M. raspberry truffle in eggshell on the walls. |

Thought I would post a summary to go along with house and kitchen photos posted in the gallery - since I forgot to do that earlier. Kitchen - Jenn-Air wall ovens and Refrigerator, Amana SS microwave, Bosch DW, and Viking 48" range top, 4 burners, griddle, and grill, Viking hood with 1200 cfm blower. Kindred sink (KSDCRU) with Price Pfister faucet. Pendant lights are Minka-Lavery - Ancient Stone. Counters and backsplash are Juperana Sunset (3cm and 2cm). Floor tile is Florida tile - Ankara, True Beige, 16x16. Backsplash behind cooktop is same tile in black with Lucas inserts. Cabinets were designed by my wife and I and made by local cabinet maker. Wall color is Benjamin Moore - Kentucky Haze AC-16. Fireplace in living room was salvaged from an old bank building and refinished - approx 102 years old. New surround is Rain Forest Green marble. Entertainment center was designed to hold new TV and electronics and built by same cabinet maker. Floors in living and dining room and 1/4 sawn white oak and site finished. Wall color is Benjamin Moore - Puritan Grey HC-164. Light fixtures in dining room and foyer are also from Minka-Lavery. We did all the design work ourselves and had loads of fun but sometimes got to be a headache. Looking forward to doing it again. Working on new set of plans right now. |

We finally finished the bulk of the kitchen (I don't think that it will ever really be completed!!!) There are still a few things left to do. Doors need to be aligned, trim piece above the refrigerator, caulking..... I really enjoyed this forum and the baths forum during our whole house remodel/addition. We started June 9, 2003 and moved back home 10 days before Thanksgiving (to a mostly finished home). The cabinets are made by Omega Cabinet Company www.omegacabinets.com. I have a mixture of Omega and Dynasty with the Marco Door in maple wood Alma Carmel (painted & glazed) and Coffee Cocoa (stained & glazed). The soffits are built out to the profile of the cabinets (don't think that really shows in the photo's). They are painted to match the cabinets. My DH did the backsplash. Stove - Wolf 48" all gas with grill The walls need to be painted. Right now they are BM Linen. I will probably do a faux finish, to give the kitchen a more Tuscan feeling. Thanks to all who have made suggestions and given reviews of items/products and graciously showed their kitchens. I love the NeverMT, Stainless Steel Magic (finally found at Lowes), and those micro fiber cloths (found at BJ's 9 for $8.99 3M brand) |

We had to remove a load-bearing post from the old kitchen island but couldn’t get rid of two other load-bearing posts between the family room and kitchen (we spruced them up instead). We used a fabulous GC who got the job done in two and a half months. In addition to the kitchen remodel we added a master suite. That wasn’t part of the original plan but we had to deal with getting the roofline of the sunroom even with the existing kitchen so we decided to go ahead and build upward as well. The footprint of the house stayed the same but now we have a fabulous walk-in closet and sitting room upstairs as a bonus. Many thanks to the people my DH fondly calls “The Cult”. Much inspiration was gained from Vatmark’s kitchen, Gellchom’s and Rima’s cork flooring, Weed’s island and topmount sink, Julie O’s exuberance with her “Big Sink”, Norman’s Caesarstone expertise. The list could go on and on. I’m glad I found this forum when we were in the planning stages. It took over a year from idea to reality and to think it all started out with wanting to replace our counters and a couple of old appliances ;) |

Our condo is on the top level of a converted church circa 1912 and our unit is located in the loft of the church above the arch ceiling - hence the steel I beams you see in our unit. Cabinets: Paris Kitchens – Concord (Shaker) Maple with a Chestnut stain Stainless steel bar pulls from Lee Valley Tools for all the lower cabinets and for the uppers a brushed nickel knob which I bought from a local store Summerhill Hardware. We used stainless steel for the countertop and had the franke sink welded in. Stainless countertops are highly recommended. I bake a lot and it's great for pastry and cleaning up. For the backsplash we used a slab of Calacatta Oro. STAINLESS STEEL COUNTERTOP experience from previous post: I love the stainless counter but in retrospect I would have had the sink under mounted instead of welding it in. Under mounting would have made the installation a lot simpler. With the sink welded, the whole L shaped counter top had to be lifted and the sink aimed for its cabinet. It was very hairy and so heavy I had to pitch in for extra lift and maneuverability. There were 6 of us lifting this thing and it weighed a ton. We still managed to break part of the cut out on the top of the cabinet and it was glued back. It was also very difficult to maneuver the L-shaped counter top with the sink through the corridors and through the doors. You should get your fab to check all the doors and angles. Also under mounting means the plumber could have access and install the faucet and then the sink with less complaint. The fab complained that the sink we bought may not be thick enough (just his way of covering himself). The sink is 18 gauge and the countertop is 16 gauge. Apparently, if there is a large difference in gauge, the edge of the sink could pucker or fold or the whole sink could warp during the welding process. Some good fab will require you to get their approval before you buy a particular sink. If you like what they can supply and the price, they can supply the sink then the risk would be on them and not on you. 20/20 hindsight … Thank goodness, the fab did a great job. Our builder has seen some horrors. |

Kitchen done in 2001, before I found this forum. I'm still hooked as I have another bathroom demo and remodel in the future (gone the pink and gray tile!) so I thought I needed to get in the gallery for a frame of reference. -Cherry cabinets with natural stain made by local cabinet maker This is our "forever house" and even thou this kitchen remodel has vinyl floors and laminate counters, it certainly didn't stay within any budget that I had. Went for the gusto on the cabinetry, when the post was active on "what did you pay for your cabinets," I think mine was the highest except for someone in the NYC area, but I have about 2x the size of a normal kitchen. DH knows that when I die I want to be "baked and shaked" and that I'll be using that granite that would be my headstone someday on my counters, and the floors will go to cork. Love THS....have shown the gallery photos to many friends thinking about remodeling, and the forums are fantastic. Keep posting!!! |

Old Ubatuba Replaces Stark White
One forum reader, upon seeing our before pictures, said, "It looks like a nurse's station in a hospital!" Indeed. Out went the white Formica counter tops and the green and white wallpaper. Out went the dark green tile floor. In came much more elegance, nicer appliances in general and a double oven in particular. And we had a sudden inspiration that led us to a graceful curve on the island. Here are a before and after picture (click for larger versions). What we did was:
The oven cabinet had to be rebuilt to accomodate the taller than normal DCS ovens. Luckily, we found the original cabinet manufacturer and got new shorter matching doors for over the ovens. This is a working kitchen. Hardcore Food Network junkies, we enjoy cooking for our family, including our two high schoolers. We've been very pleased with the look and the usefulness of the kitchen and appliances. |

We’ve been at it for a year now. Demolition started during the blizzard of 2003. Gutted everything and tore down a wall. I can say that it’s 99% done. All DIY except wood floors which we had a friend’s floor guy put in and the brickwork involved in closing in the exterior door in the kitchen. The total cost of the renovation is close to 22K. Here’s the spec: Kraftmaid Piermont Cathedral Honey Spice Maple from HD with all full-extension drawers and APC (All Plywood Construction) Neat Features learned only from this GREAT forum: Tapmaster – hands-free faucet activation Made DH build the trashcan pullout and the toekick drawers after hearing about it from here. He wasn’t too happy that I came up with more work for him and told me not to read the forum but now he’s thrill with it and shows it off whenever possible. We used the Accuride drawer slides with overtravel. These are some great slides. Incidentally, these slides are also from Hafele. They do have some great products. Neat feature that didn’t get incorporated: Plugmold - Found out about it too late and DH was not about to redo all the electrical again. Neat Ideas for extra doors/parts for the cabinets due to bad workmanship: Cut the edge of the doors and use it for moulding for the bottom of the wall cabinets, which keeps the undercabinet lights from view. |

I've got red birch cabinets custom-made and modeled after Quakermaid Koln cabinets. The countertop is blue pearl granite with matching tiles. The floor is Mirage red oak. The sink is an Elkay undermount - the faucet is by Kohler except that I replaced the sprayer with one by Price-Pfister. My appliances are: range DCS RGSC-305SS |

Our kitchen remodel is finally done. We began in January of this year, thinking we'd be done in the spring, but ultimately, we completed in early July. This began with a 25 year old 11x9 dilapidated kitchen. The new kitchen required the removal of the 3 walls of the old kitchen, including busting into the old dining room (which was previously moved to the old formal living room). My husband and I renovated every single room in the house as DIY over the last 6 years, except for the kitchen, which we've contracted out. The result is a large kitchen with 4 new windows and a new door, leading out onto a new deck. It also includes a new 5 x 5 walk-in pantry, a butler’s pantry and bar area leading to the dining room, new bookshelves and a baker’s pantry. In addition to the kitchen, we added an 18 x 18 sunroom, to get some light in our lives, since our living room has a northern orientation. This is designed to be a 2+ cook kitchen, thus the double prep areas. My husband and I cook together all the time, and wanted separate work areas, so we had room to move. Bruce is tall, so his counters have been elevated to 40". The remaining counters in the kitchen are set at 37.5". New Kitchen Dimensions - 26’6" x 13’7". |
